What you should know about Property Crimes
What you should know about Property Crimes…
Great news for property owners… Property crime has decreased throughout the U.S. according to statistics released by the FBI. They define a crime as a burglary, larceny or theft, car theft from your home, and arson. All of these crimes listed were decreased by 3% from 2016 to 2017.
In 2017 the victims of property crime totaled $15.3 billion in property damages which is significant so we hope that this new trend will continue. Burglaries are down by 7.6%, thefts are down 2.2%, car thefts are just slightly up at 0.8%.
The positive side of these stats is that in total property crimes have dropped 13.6% since 2013 and has dropped 26.5% since 2008. Violent crime have also been decreasing which is great news! There is still a long way to go because there are still 1.24 million violent crimes still happening, but this stat is down 0.2% from 2016 to 2017.
Crimes are scary, personally our home was broke into a couple of years ago and I can tell you first hand that this leaves you feeling very vulnerable. Home Security Systems are attributed partly to this decrease in property crimes.
The bottom line is to be smart, think about getting some sort of a security system, be alert to what’s going on in your neighborhood, get to know your neighbors and possibly put a neighborhood watch program in place, keep your house and car doors locked and hopefully this will all help you sleep better at night. The possibility of falling victim to these types of crimes are much lower than what most people believe.
Be safe!
