The Heilbrun Home Team Helping Stomp Out Diabetes in Pierce County. Doing our part to turn Type 1 into Type NONE!

20150509_085041

On Saturday, May 9th, 2015 The Heilbrun Home Team, along with other agents from the John L. Scott – Orting office participated in the 2015 JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, WA. Michelle McDonald, a real estate broker on the Heilbrun Home Team, has had Type 1 for 14 years. Seeing her struggles on a daily basis we felt that it was important to show our support to not only her but to the whole diabetic community. Thus our team, Michelle’s Sugar Stompers, was formed.
The walk started at 9am with a lot of pre-festivities, a DJ, face painting, a bouncy house, games and lots of diabetic friendly snacks and of course TONS of information. Some group stretching and then we were off and walking. What a gorgeous day for a walk it was and as a team we had great conversation and some great bonding moments. We are already starting to plan our fundraising for the 2016 walk. We are so excited!!! If you want to get involved in a walk in your area or would like to learn more about Type 1 Diabetes and the research that JDRF does, please visit: www.jdrf.org

What is Type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease where a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin. T1D, also known as juvenile diabetes, effects both children and adults. T1D has nothing to do with how you live your life or how you eat and currently there is no cure. Type 1 Diabetics have to take multiple shots of insulin a day to make up for the pancreas not doing its job.

What is Type 2 diabetes?

Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) differs from Type 1 because unlike Type 1, the pancreas still produces insulin but it doesn’t produce enough or the body can’t use the insulin well enough to control the blood sugars. T2D can be controlled with medication, diet change and exercise and it can be reversed.

What does JDRF do?

JDRF is the only global organization that has an actual research plan to turn Type 1 into Type NONE. From beginning stages of researching to the final delivery to the patient, JDRF is involved all the way. Since the foundation started in 1970 they have funded over 1.8 billion dollars to research. They are currently funding research projects in 17 countries and more than 50 human clinical trials.

If you would like to participate in the 2016 JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes with Michelle’s Sugar Stompers, please call me at 253-307-6438.

Real Estate and the Millennial

Real Estate and the Millennial

bannerimage1

As a mom of two millennial kids I can say that I am very concerned about the potential for them to buy real estate in the near future. My son is fortunate, he has been a Realtor for the past 3 years and has worked very hard to put himself in a position to buy a home. Our daughter, however, took a different route in life. She has always wanted to be an architect and went through college to achieve her masters in her chosen field. As a proud parent of both of my children, I have seen both sides of the millennial struggle. According to the National Association of Realtors last year millennials made up 32% of the real estate market and this year it’s estimated to be at 31%.
My concern is that our educated, college graduates will have so much student loan debt that they will not be able to buy for quite some time. Many millennials may have to choose between paying off their student loan debt, saving for their own kids college, paying bills or buying a home. Only 22% of the 30 plus year old millennials who have student loan debt also owned a home last year. That is down from 34% in 2008. This is a very concerning trend and it’s not expected to rebound.
My job is my passion and my goal is to help as many millennials as I can to achieve home ownership. I own a local John L. Scott Real Estate office in Pierce County, Washington. After seeing the rising struggle of our young millennials I have a true want to help them. If you know of a millennial that is struggling with the home buying process and would like some free advice please have them call me at 253-307-6438.

Gardening Season is upon us!

Gardening Season is upon us!

February is a tough month! We’re on the verge of winter being over, but it’s not quite Spring. Everything is dead looking from the winter months and you are anxious to get your home looking presentable. One shining star are those nice bulbs you planted last year popping their little heads out, I just love that! The weather isn’t always the best either which makes February the toughest month for gardening. Here are a few tips to give you a heads start on your Spring gardening plans for your yard:

1) Take down some notes as to what your yard looks like in the winter and plan ahead so that next season you can plant a few new ones that can add some character to your yard in those dreary winter months.

2) Get organized by figuring out your seed and plant orders

3) Apply dormant oil fruit spray to your plants

4) Trim back any branches that were damaged by those lifeless winter months

5) Keep an eye on houseplant pests

6) Harvest winter crops before they bolt

7) Get your garden tools in order and your mower back in shape

8) Start to rejuvenate annual flower beds

9) Start planting seeds of cool season vegetables and flowers

10) Check evergreens for signs of dehydration

11) Rejuvenate holly bushes with a hard pruning

12) Cut some branches for forcing indoors

13) Prune trees and shrubs, both ornamentals and fruit

14) Use an acid type rhododendron fertilizer to feed evergreens, conifers, rhododendrons, azaleas & camellias

15) Use an all-purpose fertilizer to feed roses and other deciduous trees and shrubs. If using dry type fertilizers, water it thoroughly

16) Check outside trees and plants for animal damage

17) Check flower beds for plants that may have died over the winter and remove

18) Replace mulch as needed

Enjoy yourselves as we enter gardening season!
